In this hands-on workshop, we'll create watercolor monoprints using paints made from earth pigments. Earth pigments are natural colorants derived from rocks, minerals, and soil, offering a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to synthetic paints. By using materials directly sourced from our environment, we’ll create a unique palette that captures the essence of the landscapes around us.

We'll start by looking at different rocks, minerals, and natural materials from the area. We’ll grind them into fine dust with a mortar and pestle to make our own paints. Using these handmade paints, we'll create watercolor monoprints inspired by the landscapes where the materials were found. Monoprinting is a great printmaking technique for all skill levels. You can trace an existing drawing or photo, or paint your own design from scratch.

Lithography is a planographic printmaking process in which a drawing is rendered on a limestone or ball-grain aluminum plate with greasy drawing materials like lithography crayons, and touche. The surface is chemically treated to etch (affix) the image into the surface of the plate.

For this two-Day workshop we will be using Aluminum Ball-grain Plates as this material is lightweight, requires minimal storage, and easily accessible. This class will cover Material prep, Basic drawing Techniques, Registration, Etching, and Color Printing.   Students will learn to do a one-layer lithography print in color.

Think about the image that you want to render, graphite drawings on paper and photographs are a great source of reference materials. Students will be able to create a lithography image as large as 11” x 15 “drawing.

Repeat Pattern Printing with Cassie McGettigan

Time: 10am - 4pm MT both days

Price: $300

Max Participants: 10

A pattern can be a language, a puzzle, a labyrinth; it need not be a mystery. Come, let's crack the code! In this immersive workshop, we will learn how to engineer, register, and print 4-way repeating patterns on fabric.

On our first day together, participants will be introduced to the process of transforming an abstract mark into a bold all-over pattern or a carefully observed drawing into a climbing floral design. We’ll cover fundamental structures, such as straight repeats, half-drop repeats, and mirrored tiles, and various approaches to developing repeating units.

The following day, we will consider multiple methods for printing our designs, including the use of commonplace and recycled materials and how to carve custom linoleum blocks. Then we will learn to register and print our designs on fabric. Participants will make several experimental samplers and a short run of a finished design on a T-shirt or length of cotton fabric.
