Earth Pigment Monoprints with Celine Gordon
Earth Pigment Monoprints with Celine Gordon
Date: Friday, October 11, 2024
Time: 10am - 4pm MT
Location: Power and Light Press
Price: $150
Max Participants: 12
Workshop Description:
In this hands-on workshop, we'll create watercolor monoprints using paints made from earth pigments. Earth pigments are natural colorants derived from rocks, minerals, and soil, offering a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to synthetic paints. By using materials directly sourced from our environment, we’ll create a unique palette that captures the essence of the landscapes around us.
We'll start by looking at different rocks, minerals, and natural materials from the area. We’ll grind them into fine dust with a mortar and pestle to make our own paints. Using these handmade paints, we'll create watercolor monoprints inspired by the landscapes where the materials were found. Monoprinting is a great printmaking technique for all skill levels. You can trace an existing drawing or photo, or paint your own design from scratch.
Instructor Bio:
I am a full-time artist and educator focused primarily on illustration, painting, and printmaking. I grew up in Albuquerque and am proud to be a 17th-generation New Mexican. I received my bachelor's degree in Art History and Architecture at Barnard College and worked for various architecture and graphic design firms including Luke Bulman Office in Brooklyn and Design Plus here in Albuquerque. I was also the education director for Indigo Moose, a sister organization of Design Plus, teaching design programs for elementary and middle school students. I currently teach art and design independently through the NMArt, FUSE Makerspace, and Harwood Art Center. Teaching is such an important part of how I share my work because it offers a way to engage with art in a communally focused way. As I look to the future, I remain committed to creating art that celebrates the beauty of New Mexico and fosters connection.
